A Guide to Australian Cuisine

Feb 10 , 2012

As a country that is completely surrounded by water, Australia has a lot of different food selections to choose from, including fish and many other local cuisines. For a great variety of food, look no further than the beautiful city of Perth.

Australia is the sixth-largest country in the world when it comes to size. It is an English speaking country that is known for kangaroos and being highly developed. It has one of the largest economies in the world. Due to its extreme diversity and great size, there are a great deal of food choices to pick from when visiting. When venturing to Australia, be sure to sample some of the local cuisine. Here is a guide to the best Australia has to offer.

Stuffed zucchini flowers: This is made by frying chopped onions in olive oil until it is soft and adding beef mince. Throw in chopped herbs, tomato puree and rice to the mix. Place a spoonful of the fried beef on top of zucchini flowers and enjoy.

Couscous: This Lebanese dish is made of salted water, course semolina, and fine semolina. Semolina is a type of wheat that is used in making pasta and other delicious foods. Place everything into a steamer and boil for 25 minutes.

Calamari with spinach and black rice: This cuisine is made with squid or cuttlefish. The fish is cleaned and chopped into thick pieces. Add rice and a few other ingredients, including spinach. Make sure to cook, stirring occasionally.

Brown lentils in rougaille: This tomato-type soup is made from brown lentils and a lot of tomatoes. The recipe can take up to two hours to cook, but is one of the most tasty things in Australia. Eat with a spoon and enjoy the unique taste.

Barbecued baby snapper: As a country that is surrounded by water, Australia has their fair share of tasty fish recipes. This may just be the best of them all. It is made up of two small baby snappers and a knob shrimp paste roasted in alfoil. Add a few other freshly chopped vegetables for added seasoning.

Gremolta: Made of finely chopped rosemary, sage, parsley, lemon, and garlic cloves and served on top of grilled fish. It is traditionally an Italian dish, but the Australians have grown to love it and make it one of their own.

Swordfish and seared scallops with asparagus: This meal is composed of swordfish fillets and large sea scallops. Add in a few asparagus spears and serve it up for everyone to enjoy.

Nothing compliments a great meal like a cold beer, or glass of wine, so hit up one of the local bars after dinner.
